Born in Cavenham in Q2-1893 [Mildenhall 4a:800], to Thomas and Emily Isabella ORBELL (née HUDSON) of 30 Lowther Street, Newmarket.
1901 census...Aubrey [7] was in Albion Street, Newmarket with his father Thomas [48],a domestic coachman, born Barrow; his mother Emily [48] born Higham; brother Thomas [21] a hotel barman born Risby; sisters Gertrude [20]; Maud [16]; Laura [15]; Caroline [12] and Mildred [9] together with his brothers Hugh [13]; Alfred [11] and Walter [6]. all born in Cavenham. 1911 census...Aubrey [17] was working for Lord Hampden at The Hoo, Welwyn, Herts. His parents, sister Gertrude and brother Alfred were still at 30 Lowther Street. 1 of the 13 children had died. Cambridge Daily News dated 3rd July 1917:- Mr and Mrs T Orbell of 30 Lowther Street, Newmarket had 7 sons in the Army until they received the news that their 6th son, Private A Orbell of the King's Shropshire Light Infantry was killed in action on May 11th last year. The 6 sons now serving are: Private E Orbell, 2-3 London Regiment; Gunner T Orbell, RGA; Private H Orbell, Royal Fusiliers; Lance Corporal F Orbell, KRR; Gunner A G Orbell, RGA and First Artificer M C Orbell, RFA. |

He enlisted in Hereford. Whilst CWGC have him as Aubery Archibald, his medal index card has him as Arthur. The war diary [National Archives - WO95/1421] has it :- 'On 8/9th May Bn relieved 8th E Yorks in N and O trenches. Casualties this tour as follows - 2Lt EG Rumfitt wounded 11.5.16, 2Lt WL Bolt wounded and died of wounds 13.5.16. OR killed 7, wounded 21. Enemy used trench mortars very freely during this tour. Considerable shelling of Bois Carre and communication trenches took place. On 14/15th May 7 KSLI were relieved by 8th E Yorks and proceeded to La Clytte. One man was accidentally wounded.' The area was between Vierstraat and St Eloi, and in the triangle of Bois Carre and Bois Confluent(in British lines) and Bois Quarante in the German lines. The 7th Battalion by the end of the war had suffered the most casualties of any battalion in the Regiment From the 1914-1918.invision.com forum came this snippet of information Aubrey ORBELL enlisted at Hereford on or near the 14th November 1914, he landed in France between 20th and 21st May 1915 with the 5th Battalion. He was wounded on or about the 25th September 1915 (reported wounded in the local paper on 16th Oct 1915 with other men of 5th Batt. wounded on or near 25th Sept.) during attack on Bellewaard. |
